My daughter was twelve months old when we noticed unusual symptoms and body movements in her. We had no family history of autism, but I had sufficient knowledge about this condition. We took her to a doctor at Teknon Medical Center and discussed her symptoms. The doctor started ABA therapy for her, and it worked well. Now she is three years old, and 70% of her symptoms have been reduced. Thanks to her amazing doctor.

I had to undergo two sessions of radiation therapy, but I am glad to announce that the tumor is gone. I am extremely grateful to ClinicsonCall for connecting me to Teknon Medical Center.

I recently had a PET MRI Scan at Teknon Medical Center, and I must say that the experience was surprisingly comfortable. From the moment I walked in, the staff made sure I felt at ease, taking the time to explain the procedure and address any concerns. The technicians were incredibly patient and understanding, making sure I was comfortable before starting the scan. The facility itself was clean and well-maintained, contributing to an overall positive experience. I appreciate the care I received at Teknon Medical Center during my scan.

My son was born with scoliosis, and his hunched back deprived him of many activities that a normal kid would do. We started searching for the treatment, but it was unavailable in our country. We decided to search abroad and found out about clinics on call through a friend. We were set up with their coordinator, who suggested we consult Dr. Bartolme Oliver. We did a thorough research on the Internet and decided to visit him. Fortunately, the doctor said it was possible to correct the scoliosis for which he did the surgery. We stayed in Spain for six months, which was worth it. Dr. Oliver was very supportive and helpful throughout our journey.

I recently underwent treatment for a spinal cyst, and I must say that the care I received at Quironsalud Hospital Madrid was exceptional. My symptoms were quite debilitating and had been affecting my quality of life for some time, but the doctors and staff at the hospital were incredibly compassionate and attentive to my needs. The diagnostic process was thorough and efficient, and my doctor explained everything to me so that I knew exactly what was happening. The treatment plan was tailored to my situation, and the surgical procedure went smoothly without complications. After the surgery, I received excellent follow-up care, with regular check-ins to monitor my progress and ensure I was recovering well. I am feeling much better now and can enjoy my daily activities without pain or discomfort. I am satisfied with the care I received and would highly recommend this hospital to anyone in need of similar treatment.

I recently experienced an Intracranial Hematoma, which was a scary and challenging situation to deal with. It started with a sudden and severe headache, followed by nausea and vomiting, and then I started feeling confused and disoriented. I was rushed to the Quironsalud Hospital Madrid, where I underwent a CT scan that showed bleeding in my brain. The doctors quickly diagnosed me with an Intracranial Hematoma and took me into surgery to remove the clot. The procedure was successful, and I am grateful to the skilled medical team that saved my life. The recovery process was not easy, as I had to spend some time in the ICU and then in a rehabilitation center to regain my strength and mobility. I also had to take medication to prevent seizures and manage my pain. Now, several months after the incident, I am still dealing with some residual symptoms, such as headaches and memory problems. However, I am slowly but surely regaining my independence and returning to my normal activities.

I recently underwent MRI-Guided Stereotactic Laser Ablation for a brain tumor at Quironsalud Madrid, and I have to say that the procedure was nothing short of amazing. The team of doctors who performed the procedure were incredibly skilled and knowledgeable, and they explained everything to me in detail so that I knew what to expect. They also ensured that I was comfortable throughout the process and that all my questions were answered. The procedure was quick and painless, and I could go home the same day. I had some mild discomfort and headache for a few days afterwards, but it was nothing that could not be managed with over-the-counter pain medication. I am incredibly grateful for the care and attention that I received.

Diagnostics Before Epilepsy Surgery in Spain

Before undergoing the procedure, you’ll undergo a series of diagnostic tests to determine the location of the seizures and identify any structural abnormalities in the brain. These may include:

  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to create detailed images of the brain
  • Electroencephalogram (EEG) to record electrical activity in the brain
  • Positron emission tomography (PET) scans to measure brain activity and identify areas of abnormality
  • Neuropsychological testing to assess cognitive function and determine the impact of seizures on daily life

Preparing for Epilepsy Surgery in Spain

If you are undergoing surgery for epilepsy in Spain, you’ll need to follow specific instructions provided by your doctor. These may include:

Surgeries for Epilepsy in Spain

There are several surgical procedures available for the treatment of epilepsy in Spain. The most common surgical procedures for epilepsy include;

Surgical Resection:

In surgical resection for epilepsy, the neurosurgeon takes out a specific area of the brain. This may include removing brain tissue where seizures start or getting rid of abnormal brain tissue that causes seizures. Surgical resection options include;

  1. Lesionectomy: It is a surgical procedure where the removal of lesions, such as tumors, cavernous hemangiomas, and arteriovenous malformations, that can be responsible for causing seizures in patients is done.
  2. Anterior temporal lobectomy: This procedure involves the removal of the temporal lobe of the brain, where seizures often originate.
  3. Hemispherectomy: This procedure involves the removal of one-half of the brain. It is typically only performed in children with severe epilepsy that does not respond to other treatments.
  4. Multilobar resection is a type of surgery that involves removing two or more lobes of the brain, either partially or completely. This procedure is only recommended if the lobes in question do not have any critical functions.

Surgical Disconnection:

Surgical disconnection involves severing the connection between healthy brain regions and the tissues that trigger seizures.

  1. Corpus callosotomy: This surgery involves cutting the corpus callosum, which is the bundle of nerves that connects the two hemispheres of the brain. This procedure is usually reserved for patients with severe epilepsy that affects both sides of the brain.
  2. Multiple subpial transections: MST is a type of surgery that involves making multiple shallow cuts into a limited section of the brain tissue. The goal of this surgery is to stop the spread of seizures by interrupting communication between the nerve cells responsible for seizures and other normal nerve cells. It is recommended when it is unsafe to remove the part of the brain where the seizures are originating.

Neuromodulation (Implanted Devices)

A neuromodulation is a treatment option for epilepsy that utilizes implanted electrical devices to decrease or halt seizures. Various types of neuromodulation are available, such as:

  1. Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS): This surgery involves implanting a small device that delivers electrical impulses to the vagus nerve, which is a nerve that runs from the brain to the abdomen. The electrical impulses can help reduce the frequency and severity of seizures.
  2. Responsive neurostimulation (RNS) is a treatment option for adult patients with early epilepsy who have failed at least two anticonvulsants and are not candidates for resection. RNS uses a device similar to a pacemaker that monitors brain waves and responds to seizure activity by sending small electrical pulses to block the spread of seizures.
  3. Deep brain stimulation(DBS)  is a newer treatment that involves implanting electrodes in the thalamus, a deep region of the brain responsible for sensory perception and motor regulation. The electrodes are connected to a stimulating device under the skin of the chest, which sends electrical impulses to the thalamus to block the spread of seizures.

Stereotactic radiosurgery

It is a surgical procedure utilizing 3D computerized imaging to precisely target and eliminate the malfunctioning nerve cells that cause seizures by directing radiation beams at the affected area.

Laser interstitial thermal therapy

This minimally invasive surgical treatment option uses a laser to inactivate the brain tissue causing seizures in some patients. LITT involves a tiny hole in the skull, and the laser is directed using MRI to the area of the brain, causing seizures.

How is Epilepsy Surgery Done in Spain?

Epilepsy surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia, and the specific procedure will depend on the individual patient's condition and the location of the seizures in the brain.

  • Before the surgery, the patient's head is shaved in the area where the surgery will be performed.
  • The neurosurgeon makes a small incision in the scalp and removes a small section of the skull bone to access the brain.
  • In some cases, the neurosurgeon may perform an EEG during surgery to locate the precise area or source of the seizures. The patient may also be awakened during part of the procedure to help map out areas of the brain that control vital functions such as speech or movement.
  • Once the area of the brain where the seizures occur is identified, the neurosurgeon will surgically remove or treat the brain tissue using an appropriate surgical approach.
  • After the surgical treatment is complete, the neurosurgeon replaces the bone that was removed from the skull and secures it in place. The skin covering the skull is closed with sutures or staples, and a bandage is applied.

The entire surgery can take several hours to complete. Recovery time and post-operative care vary depending on the type and extent of the surgery performed.

Recovery After Epilepsy Surgery in Spain

Recovery after surgery can vary depending on the specific surgical procedure performed and the patient's individual circumstances.

  • You can expect to spend several days in the hospital following surgery to monitor your recovery and manage pain or discomfort.
  • After leaving the hospital, you’ll need to take it easy for a few weeks to allow your body to heal properly. You may experience some fatigue, headaches, and nausea during this time, but these symptoms should gradually improve over time.
  • You’ll need to follow a specific recovery plan outlined by your doctor. This may include taking medications to manage pain and prevent seizures, attending physical therapy to improve strength and mobility, and following a specific diet to promote healing.
  • It's important to attend all follow-up appointments with your doctor to monitor recovery and address any concerns that may arise.
  • It may take several months or more to fully recover from epilepsy surgery, but most patients are able to return to their normal activities and daily routines with time.

Risks of Epilepsy Surgery in Spain

Like any surgical procedure, surgery for epilepsy carries some risks. Some of the potential risks and complications of epilepsy surgery may include:

  1. Infection
  2. Seizures
  3. Hemorrhage
  4. Cognitive changes
  5. Numbness or weakness
  6. Vision problems

Reviews about surgery of epilepsy in Spain

Surgery of Epilepsy | Epilepsy
Lincoln Jones, United States :
I had been struggling with epilepsy for years and had tried several medications, but nothing seemed to work. I was tired of living with constant seizures and the impact they had on my daily life. HM Delfos had the most advanced equipment available for my procedure, and Dr. Jesus Lafuente was incredible. The surgery itself went smoothly, and I was impressed by the level of care and attention I received during my recovery.

The quality of care and expertise available, combined with the affordability of the procedure, making it the best decision I could have made for my health. I am now seizure-free and able to enjoy my daily life without the constant fear and anxiety that epilepsy had brought me before.
