WHAT IS OSTEOID OSTEOMA?
Osteoid osteoma is a benign neoplasm that affects the bones of the skeleton. The disease occurs in 11% of cases among other non-aggressive bone tumors. Diagnosed at the age of 4-25 years. Most of the patients are men. The tumor is not life-threatening, as it progresses very slowly and does not lead to cancer.
Most often, osteoid osteoma affects tubular and long bones, namely:
- thigh bone;
- tibia;
- the bones of the spine;
- talus;
- bones of the hands.
HOW MUCH DOES OSTEOID OSTEOMA TREATMENT COST?
The cost of osteoid osteoma treatment depends on the complexity of the disease, the method of tumor removal, the duration of hospitalization, and rehabilitation. In addition, the cost of medical services differs in different countries. In clinics in Europe and Israel, famous doctors are practicing, whose treatment is more expensive. Turkey and South Korea offer medical services at prices 25-50% lower than in similar European or Israeli clinics.

REASONS FOR OSTEOID OSTEOMA DEVELOPMENT
The exact reasons for the development of osteoid osteoma are still not known. It is believed that the onset of the disease is caused by:
- trauma;
- inflammation and infection;
- rheumatism, gout;
- genetic predisposition.
SYMPTOMS OF THE OSTEOID OSTEOMA
The main symptom of osteoid osteoma is pain at the site of the tumor, which is especially noticeable at night. However, at the beginning of the development of the disease, symptoms may be absent or mild. Pain and discomfort occur when the tumor grows and begins to squeeze the surrounding tissue.
Symptoms of osteoid osteoma may differ depending on the location of the tumor:
- osteoid osteoma of the femur and lower extremities is manifested by pain when moving, lameness, swelling of the legs;
- with damage to the spine and ribs, neurological symptoms appear, scoliosis develops;
- the main symptom of osteoid osteoma of the jaw is pain, aggravated at night and with food intake.
DIFFERENCE OF THE OSTEOID OSTEOMA FROM OTHER TYPES OF OSTEOMA
Osteoid osteoma belongs to the group of hyperplastic osteomas. Such formations appear from bone tissue. Tumors that are composed of connective tissue are called heteroplastic. This group includes osteophytes that affect bones and soft tissues.
What is the Difference Between Osteoma, Osteoid Osteoma, and Osteophytes?
- The osteoid osteoma is saturated with blood vessels. Consists of bone-forming cells that destroyed bone tissue and bone membranes. It can develop on any bones but rarely develops in the bones of the skull and face. For example, osteoid osteoma of the jaw is a rare disease that is diagnosed mainly in boys aged 5-15 years.
- Osteoma has a structure similar to bones. Mainly affects the bones of the skull and face - for example, osteoma of the paranasal sinuses, frontal or occipital bones. At the beginning of development, the disease is asymptomatic. Pain and other symptoms appear when the swelling is large.
- Osteophytes can invade the medullary canal or develop on the outer bony membrane.
DIAGNOSTICS OF OSTEOID-OSTEOMA IN HOSPITALS ABROAD
The clinical picture of osteoid osteoma is similar to the manifestations of other diseases, for example, osteoma, osteosarcoma, Brodie's abscess, osteomyelitis, juxtacortical chondroma, bone infarction, etc. Differential diagnostics is performed to distinguish osteoid osteoma from other neoplasms and diseases.
Examination for osteoid osteoma:
- X-ray: The main diagnostic method. Allows you to find out the location of the tumor, the structure, the degree of bone damage.
- Computed tomography (CT): Allows you to detect the smallest neoplasms and pathological processes in the bones, which are invisible on X-rays.
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI): An alternative method for the diagnosis of osteoid osteoma. It is used in the case of uninformative radiography.
- Angiography: Study of the circulatory system of the tumor.
- Scintigraphy: A method for examining bones, which helps to see various changes in bone tissues (infections, inflammations, degenerative processes, neoplasms).
- Biopsy: It is carried out to study tumor cells and confirm the diagnosis.
BASIC METHODS FOR TREATMENT OF OSTEOID OSTEOMA
If the osteoid osteoma is small, has stopped growing, and does not cause inconvenience to the patient, then treatment and surgical removal is not required. In such a case, an observant tactic is recommended.
If the tumor is large, compresses adjacent tissues, causes scoliosis, causes pain and discomfort, it must be removed. For osteoid osteoma, the following surgical methods are used:
Curettage
The neoplasm is scraped off the surface of the bone. To access the tumor, a deep incision must be made. After removal of the neoplasm, the space in the bone is filled with bone cement.
Removal of an osteoid osteoma along with a portion of the affected bone
Bone removal surgery is performed if the tumor has reached a large size. After such a surgical procedure, it may be necessary to replace the removed portion of the bone.
ADVANTAGES OF SURGICAL REMOVAL OF THE OSTEOID OSTEOMA:
If the tumor has been removed completely, then the chances of a return of the disease are practically nonexistent. After the operation, 80% of patients get rid of the pathology forever.
DISADVANTAGES OF SURGICAL REMOVAL OF THE OSTEOID-OSTEOMA:
- Surgical removal of the tumor - with Serious intervention in the body, there is a risk of complications.
- The operation is performed under general anesthesia, therefore it is not recommended for patients with diseases of the cardiovascular system, kidneys, and liver.
- Postoperative recovery lasts 7-10 days. In addition, after surgical removal of the tumor, patients require rehabilitation. Full recovery occurs in six months.
MEDICINAL TREATMENT OF OSTEOID OSTEOMA
To treat osteoid osteoma, doctors prescribe anti-inflammatory drugs to patients. Medication can help reduce inflammation and pain. However, this treatment can be continued for a long period. It leads to disruption of the gastrointestinal tract and liver, therefore, it is contraindicated in some patients.
NEW DEVELOPMENTS IN OSTEOID OSTEOMA TREATMENT
In modern osteoid osteoma clinics, doctors prefer to treat patients with more gentle and effective methods.
Ultrasound treatment
Ultrasound radiofrequency ablation MRI-HIFU is one of the safest treatments for osteoid osteoma. With the help of an MRI machine, the location of the tumor is determined. Then ultrasonic waves are sent to the neoplasm, which destroys abnormal cells. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and lasts 2 hours. The big advantage of the treatment is the low trauma, complications are rare. In 95% of patients, the pain disappears almost immediately after the procedure.
Radiofrequency ablation
An alternative method for the treatment of osteoid osteoma without surgery. The place of pathology is determined with high accuracy using CT. Then a needle is inserted into the tumor, which heats it to 90 degrees. Due to the action of high temperature, the osteoid osteoma is rapidly destroyed. In 90% of cases, just one procedure is enough to completely remove the tumor. The treatment is carried out using local anesthesia and is therefore suitable for most patients. Hospitalization is not required.
PROGNOSIS OF OSTEOID OSTEOMA
The prognosis for the treatment of osteoid osteoma is favorable. The effectiveness of treatment depends on the method:
- treatment with ultrasound MRI-HIFU helps to completely get rid of the disease in 95% of patients;
- radiofrequency ablation - effective for 90% of patients;
- when the tumor is surgically removed, 80% of patients recover.
WHERE TO TREAT OSTEOID OSTEOMA?
Abroad, the diagnosis and treatment of the disease are carried out with the help of modern equipment and instruments. In the largest clinics in the world, equipment is updated every 5 years. For osteoid osteoma, doctors choose safe treatments, such as ultrasound or radiofrequency ablation.
The effectiveness of such treatment is higher than after surgical removal. If it is impossible to refuse the operation, then less traumatic methods are used with a lower risk to the health of patients. In addition, in foreign clinics, after tumor removal, patients have the opportunity to undergo rehabilitation for a quick recovery of the musculoskeletal system.
The leading clinics for the treatment of osteoid osteoma are:
- Turkey: Liv Clinic, Medical Park Medical Center;
- Israel: Medical Center. Sourasky (Ichilov), Assuta clinic;
- Spain: Teknon Medical Center, Quiron Barcelona Clinic.
